Exenatide

The first GLP-1 receptor agonist to reach market, a synthetic version of exendin-4 originally isolated from Gila monster venom.

Origins

Exendin-4 occurs naturally in the salivary secretions of the Gila monster and shares roughly 53% sequence identity with human GLP-1 while being naturally resistant to DPP-4. It launched the entire therapeutic class in 2005.
